DeptID structure
We are considering changing our 4 digit department code structure to a larger code block to accommodate recent growth. In organizations with multiple BU’s, do you use:
• Consistent department number across BU’s (all pathology labs are #12345)
• Distinct department numbers for each BU’s pathology lab.
In either instance, are the departments logically grouped or ranged based on similar areas (service line, BU, division, etc.).
How have you incorporate subsequent department# expansion when the business requires service line bifurcation within a given entity (i.e. one lab is now East/West lab within the same entity)?
Thank you.

Hi Carl,
We use departments across all BU's. Occasionaly we set up specific departments for specific BU's but all BU's can use them. We typically use Product Code to identify specifics activity in the ledger. We'll assign a product code to a large piece of equipment and it is typically only used by one BU, but again all BU's have access to that product code and can use it.
